Monitor Ghosting vs Motion Blur: Controlled Test Log
A moving object can leave a trail for several different reasons: pixel response time, aggressive overdrive, sample-and-hold blur, low frame rate, camera exposure, or a mismatch between the source and display refresh rates. Use this worksheet to separate them before changing multiple settings.
Record the baseline
- Monitor model and panel mode
- Native resolution and refresh rate
- Connection cable, adapter, or dock
- Overdrive / response-time setting
- Variable refresh and HDR state
- Browser and hardware acceleration state
- Room lighting and brightness percentage
Warm the monitor for at least 15 minutes. Close video playback, screen recorders, overlays, and animated background applications. Keep browser zoom at 100%.
Run one visual reference
Open the KeyboardTester.click monitor ghosting test and observe the same moving pattern for at least 30 seconds. Track the object itself, then look at the trail behind it. Do not diagnose from one pass.
A dark or same-color trail usually points toward slow pixel transitions. A bright inverse halo can indicate overdrive overshoot. General softness that becomes clearer when your eyes stop tracking may be sample-and-hold motion blur rather than a fault.
Change one variable per pass
- Test each monitor overdrive level, returning to the baseline before the next run.
- Compare two refresh rates while keeping resolution and all other settings fixed.
- Repeat with variable refresh off, then on.
- Repeat in a second browser.
- If an adapter or dock is present, compare a direct connection.
Write down the exact change and the observed difference. A faster-looking mode that introduces a bright inverse trail is not necessarily better.
Camera cross-check
A pursuit camera or high-frame-rate video can help document motion, but automatic exposure and rolling shutter can create artifacts. Lock focus and exposure, pan with the moving object, and repeat several times. Treat camera evidence as supporting data, not the only verdict.
