Post-Renovation Ventilation Dust Checklist
After drywall sanding, flooring work or other renovations, dust often settles near ventilation and exhaust equipment. Use visible evidence to decide what needs attention instead of assuming every duct needs the same service.
1. Identify the affected area
Record where the work happened and which equipment was operating nearby. Check accessible HVAC registers, a dryer vent connection, HRV/ERV grilles, bathroom exhausts and wall-mounted heat-pump filters.
2. Look for specific signs
- Visible construction dust at an intake, return or exhaust grille
- Lint or debris at an accessible dryer-vent connection
- Reduced airflow from a bathroom exhaust
- Dust on homeowner-serviceable heat-pump filters
- Debris near an HRV or ERV outdoor termination
3. Keep the service targeted
Follow the equipment manufacturer's maintenance instructions. Avoid pushing debris farther into an exhaust path, and do not open components that are not intended for homeowner service. Professional dust extraction can focus on the affected system or exhaust without mislabeling the work as generic air-duct cleaning.
