Decide Whether a Risky Pickup Is Worth Taking

A large or useful number can attract attention even when its position is awkward. Before taking the risk, separate the value of the pickup from the cost of reaching it.

Use a quick decision check in Snake 2048:

QuestionWhat to inspect
BenefitWhich specific merge does the pickup support?
CostHow much turning room will the route use?
ExitWhere can the head go afterward?
AlternativeIs there a safer route toward the same objective?

This is a planning aid, not a scoring formula. You do not need to assign numbers to the answers. The point is to stop a tempting tile from becoming the entire decision.

A pickup with a clear merge and a clear exit may justify a tight approach. A pickup that merely looks valuable, requires an uncertain turn, and leaves no obvious continuation deserves more caution.

Consider waiting when another accessible match could shorten the tail first. Improving the position can make a previously risky pickup easier to reach. Conversely, postponing a pickup without a plan is not automatically useful; identify what you expect to improve.

After the move, compare the outcome with your prediction. If the route became cramped, determine whether you overlooked tail length, approach angle, or pickup order. One concrete explanation is more useful than labeling the move simply “unlucky.”
