TSIA2 Quantitative Reasoning: The Estimate–Solve–Audit Routine
Many avoidable quantitative-reasoning errors happen after a student has chosen the correct operation. A decimal is misplaced, a percent is applied to the wrong base, or an answer that cannot fit the situation is accepted without a final check. The Estimate–Solve–Audit routine adds two short checkpoints around the calculation so that those errors are easier to catch.
1. Estimate before calculating
An estimate is not a second full solution. It is a rough prediction of the answer's size, sign, and unit.
Before touching the calculator, write three things:
- Direction: should the answer be positive, negative, larger, or smaller?
- Range: between which two convenient numbers should it fall?
- Unit: dollars, miles per hour, square feet, percentage points, or something else?
For example, suppose a 36 and must be below 60 or $12, the estimate exposes the mismatch immediately.
2. Translate the wording into one line
Do not calculate while rereading the paragraph. First convert the relationship into a compact statement.

| “increased from 40 to 50” | change = 10; percent change = 10 ÷ 40 |
| “3 miles every 20 minutes” | 3 miles ÷ 20 minutes |
| “area of a 7-by-9 rectangle” | 7 × 9 square units |
This separation matters because “percent of,” “percent less than,” and “percent change” use related arithmetic but answer different questions.
3. Solve while carrying labels
Keep units attached to important quantities. They make invalid operations visible.
If a car travels 180 miles in 3 hours, write:
180 miles ÷ 3 hours = 60 miles per hour
The label confirms that division produces a rate. If the question asks for travel time instead, rearrange the relationship:
time = distance ÷ rate
Units are especially useful when a question mixes minutes and hours, feet and inches, or linear and square measurements. Convert to a common unit before combining values.
4. Audit the result with four questions
After solving, pause for a ten-second audit:
- Range: Is the result inside the interval predicted by the estimate?
- Direction: Did an increase produce a larger value and a discount a smaller one?
- Unit: Does the answer use the unit the question requested?
- Condition: Did the work respect words such as at least, no more than, each, remaining, and except?
If one check fails, do not immediately restart the entire problem. Inspect the most likely failure point: conversion, operation choice, calculator entry, or copied number.
Worked example: unit price
A 12-ounce package costs 7.40. Which has the lower price per ounce?
Estimate. Both prices are under 1 per ounce.
Translate.
- Small package:
4.68 ÷ 12 - Large package:
7.40 ÷ 20
Solve.
- Small package:
$0.39 per ounce - Large package:
$0.37 per ounce
Audit. Both results match the predicted range and use dollars per ounce. The 20-ounce package has the lower unit price even though its total price is higher.
Worked example: percent change
Enrollment rises from 240 students to 300 students.
Estimate. The increase is 60, which is about one quarter of 240, so the percent increase should be near 25%.
Translate.
percent change = (new - original) ÷ original
Solve.
(300 - 240) ÷ 240 = 60 ÷ 240 = 0.25 = 25%
Audit. The result matches the estimate. The original value, 240, is the comparison base; dividing by 300 would answer a different question.

Use this card beside a practice set:
- Predict size, sign, and unit.
- Translate the relationship in one line.
- Convert units before calculating.
- Solve and keep labels attached.
- Check range, direction, unit, and conditions.
- Record the error type if the answer needs correction.
The final step turns a missed problem into usable evidence. A short label such as “wrong percent base,” “minutes not converted,” or “ignored at least” is more helpful than copying the whole solution.
